IRCC has announced that from Jan 2023 they are removing the requirement for dependents of work permit holders (inc. PGWP holders) to hold skilled employment (TEER 0,1,2, and 3) for their spouses to apply for an OWP (open work permit). This news also appears to apply to working-age dependent children (typically 18-21 years old).
This a great news in particular for families of students because the requirements for the PGWP applicant/holder to have skilled employment (TEER 0,1,2 or 3) will be removed making their dependents - in particular their spouse - eligible to extend their OWP which they held from student times without any delay or interruption. Essentially this will allow graduates to pursue their employment in the field of their choice without worrying about losing their spouse's family income, they will be able to apply to extend at the same time as the PGWP application.
As always, if you think you or your family may be eligible or have questions about this policy, don't hesitate to email or use the 'contact us' form.
